Imagine your job is to replace all the bolts on all of the pipes in the cooling towers at a large coal-fired power plant. What’s more, the bolts have been in that hostile environment of water and heat for a year. They are now so corroded and rusted in place that it takes a blowtorch to remove them—a slow and costly operation.
Problem seen. Problem solved. During a site visit, our VMI Service Technician noticed their problem and thought it was nuts that workers should struggle so much just because of a small part. The plant employees had never heard of fluoropolymer-coated studs. Their anti-corrosion and low friction properties were a perfect match for this situation so our Service Technician introduced them to these blue studs. Workers saw that a few turns loosened the studs with ease. Now replacing the studs is a cinch and the blowtorch has been retired.
In this case, having the blues is a good thing. This blue bolt may look unusual, but it’s saved this major energy company thousands of dollars and hundreds of man hours. Just another way that a small part can make a big difference.
